Neurulation - or the development of the spinal cord
In Neurulation the notocord acts a signaling rod for the ectoderm to fold toward the notocord. This fold eventually becomes a neural tube that pinches off, leaving the ectoderm to become our skin and the tissues of the neural tube and other nerve tissues to develop our nervous system. You may take your hands on the middle of your back and re- experience the zipping of the neural tube: It closes from center head-ward and tail-ward, completing the space that eventually will concentrate down to being the central canal in our spinal cord that houses CSF.
The brain arises from a thickening and folding of the upper spinal cord, the peripheral nerves marvelously and exuberantly multiply to reach all of the body. This actually means that multiple nerves reach each muscle. Then as a fetus and in the first years of life these nerves will be pruned to allow for more clarity and fine-tuning of movement - your actions in the world.

Once the notocord has developed - it becomes the organizing axis for all further development: cells know where they are in relationship to the notocord - whether above below , headward, tailward, and how many cels away they are.
The ectoderm above the notocord folds inward until it pinches off to create a tunnel which separates and floats forward from the ectoderm. An important process to close off this space that runs the whole length of the embryo is that the cells close and meet in the center, also zip up and down from the middle until the neural tube is complete. It is now able to protect the nerves.
Then cells populate that tunnel , which become the spinal nerves.
